“Character, like a photograph, develops in the darkness.” -Yousuf Karsh
It’s been a while since I can recall anyone having to take their film in. Even so, I think most of us are old enough to remember the process, the waiting, and the reveal of getting a picture actually developed. It would be dark, you’d usually need somebody else’s help, and some of the chemicals in the process could be messy and harsh. Sound familiar to life at all? Upgrading your equipment, aiming for a new direction, and setting things in a better light could really improve things for your next shoot. I’d argue that your life, your work, and your family can operate under these same presumptions right now. Are you learning in the darkness to improve your pictures these days? Can you embrace the “dark” moments, ask for help, and know the messiness is helping you progress & improve? We might not be able to improve the process all at once, but I’d encourage you to think of a moment or two where can you eliminate your red eyes and a blurry moment this week.
