Get some paper. Maybe your laptop or tablet.
Take 3 minutes to write/type out a paragraph or a list of "who you are." Go ahead. I'll wait... Now the fun parts: cross off all the things you DO and all the things you HAVE. That's who you are. Wrap you mind around that for a moment. If you take away everything you do and all the things you have...what's left? Our minds play tricks on us sometimes, leading us to believe we ARE something that we do/have. Examples: I AM AN ATHLETE. correction: I currently participate in athletics. I AM A MILLIONAIRE. correction: I currently have a large sum of assets. I AM AN ENTREPRENEUR. correction: I currently work for myself. or how about these: I AM A FAILURE: correction: I have yet to try enough things that will work out. I AM LONELY: correction: I have yet to build relationships that I seek. I AM BROKE: correction: I have yet to gain enough human capital to increase my income. Having the proper mindset prepares you for success in whatever you are trying to pursue or overcome. The way you frame your thoughts is shaped by the things you believe about yourself. So again...Who are you? What do you believe about yourself to be true? Is it really true? Or can it be? Here's a really easy way to answer that question and make changes that will get you results: The value you bring to the world is not in any of the things above. It is in your characteristics; it is exemplified by your CHARACTER. You can and should be learning to grow your character. A re-write of your list should be full of intangibles, traits and characteristics of WHO YOU ARE and also WHO YOU WANT TO BE! I am... HONEST, THOUGHTFUL, EMPATHETIC, TRUSTING, PATIENT, KIND, HARD WORKING, HOPEFUL, EAGER TO LEARN, QUICK TO FORGIVE, WISE, JOY-FILLED, CARING, and so on... Many times, it is by those characteristics you begin to discern what you should be doing and the things you can CHOOSE to have. Your career, your spouse, your political stances, your integrations of faith: they all are a reflection of WHO YOU ARE. It all speaks. The key is to be aware of how you're speaking by WHO YOU ARE CHOOSING TO BE. "You are valuable for who you are, not for what you do." "The more Yul Brenner's we got making it in this world, the better off this world will be."
"All you have to do is know what you want and work hard for it." FIGHT ON. How many of you are in a "one room hut?" Maybe you are literally there. Grinding it out--trying to make it to the biggest home in Kingston. I am there. Maybe you've got mental hurdles, financial issues, or health problems. I've been there. Good new for all of us: You are valuable for WHO YOU ARE, not what you do. We have a choice. I am choosing to fight on in the face of fears and dump my doubts, because that's who I AM. Will you join me? STAND UP. How many times do you take a stand for what you believe in order to get what you want? Silence the naysayers by directly confronting them with the truth...with a positive belief in your ability to achieve and overcome. Your confidence is contagious. Spread some! BE DIFFERENT. How many people do you know that are: "Going nowhere and are thrilled to death about it?" Unrealistic results come from unrealistic expectations. Hold yourself to a higher standard--in the face of criticism, in moments of doubt, in humiliation or negativity. Average is unacceptable. Anybody can be average. People expect average. Give them something Different. Even when it's something unrealistic or never been done before. Give them something different. Then... "go get your palace." LEAD ON. **Grab a couple hours to unwind and watch "Cool Runnings" (Disney, 1993) when you get a chance. Relive a piece of history (maybe, like me, relive a classic film from your childhood) and get inspired. Great examples of overcoming multiple adversities and succeeding, even when you fail. Spend some time in thought this weekend. Spend some time with those you are trying to influence as well. It is always easier to do the work up front rather than entering into scramble mode to correct or repair poor planning. My son and I had a little work/play time this morning. There is nothing better than setting up a winning culture in your family. Time is something you never get back and can't make more of. Maximize it, but remember this:
When it is time to work, work. When it is time to parent, parent. Leaders lead. Winners win. Keep moving forward! A really simple way to improve your human capital...AND INCREASE YOUR PAYCHECK...is to read.
It has been said that not every reader is a leader but every leader is a reader. You can do your own research on the most successful & wealthy people in the world today and learn how much time they invest reading, but I'm convinced that the top EARNERS are the most eager LEARNERS. I practice what I preach and today, in the name of National Book Lover's Day, I want to leave you with my TOP TEN LIST of books that have impacted my leadership, my parenting, and my paycheck. 10) Failing Forward by John C. Maxwell 9) The Power of Who by Bob Beaudine 8) The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck by Sarah Knight 7) How Good Do You Want to Be? by Nick Saban 6) Rules for My Unborn Son by Walker Lamond 5) The Book of Proverbs 4) Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi 3) The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon 2) Start With Why by Simon Sinek 1) In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson Wanna know why these are my Top 10? Give me a shout. Think I'm wrong? Tell me how! Read on. Lead on. "Your attitude determines your altitude." -Zig Ziglar Vision. Mindset. Choice. Whatever you CHOOSE to believe will begin to shape everything around you. It is certainly a choice. That means you are in CONTROL. The question is...Do you want that control? I do. And you should too. Having the ability to CHOOSE your mindset in the face of whatever is in front of you ultimately leads you toward greater control, fulfillment, and eventually your goals. Sometimes you have to take big risks, re-frame possibilities, and make the most out of sticky situations. My favorite person to coach right now is my oldest son. He doesn't even know that Daddy is working him out most of the time. Today was a great session for him, but it started some time ago. In the spring, I took a risk and ran out of our garage in a thunderstorm. No boots, umbrella, or wet suit. Pretty sure I slung my shirt off and just went for it. All I took with me was a plan. That plan was to show my man that nothing could stop me from creating my own joy in the face of a storm. It wasn't long before he was chasing me, splashing in puddles, and soaked to the bone in laughter and precipitation. The seed was planted. Rains and storms can be tremendously heavy, unpredictable, and sometimes dangerous. They can shut down baseball games, seasonal businesses, and a lot of peoples daily happiness. But those are all choices. With the correct mindset and planning, stadium owners can build retractable roofs, businesses can diversify services, and people can have the choice to pursue the beauty in the storm. Today, the storms came. Almost the exact same scenario, except who led the way out of the garage? My man. Nobody is stopping him. And nobody can stop you. Never miss a chance to play in the rain. Never shut down in the face of fear. Never stop strengthening your mind. If you want something you've never had, you have to do things you've never done. If you're struggling to find the beauty in your storm or you just want to prepare for the next rainy day in your journey, reach out to me for a performance boost and get some personalized coaching and encouragement. It is my job to give you a chance to get anything you want in life. All you have to do is CHOOSE! |
